UT Administrator Gen eral (Retd) S F Rodrigues has asked officials in the Administration to look at alternative sources of energy for the city. Speaking at a public hearing session on Monday, he suggested that the alternative sources of energy could provide a long-term solution to the energy crisis. A core group of officers, comprising the Secretary to the Governor, the Finance Secretary and the Chief Engineer, has been assigned to look into the matter.
In the last four years, power generation from thermal power units of the State have fallen down. In the earlier regime of Congress, 14560 million unit of electricity was generated from thermal units, but during the last four year rule of Bharatiya Janata Party government, various thermal units of the State could manage to generate 14460 million units, alleged KK Mishra, Pradesh Congress committee spokesperson in a press statement issued here Wednesday.
Jangveer Singh The Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) is getting pushed in the red to meet needs of non-paying consumers and earning the dubious distinction of topping the country in the purchase of costly power. According to data available with the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), the board had to purchase power to avoid cuts in past few years. The board's power purchase has increased from three to four times since 2004-05. The board purchased power worth Rs 6,000 crore in 2007-08 compared to power purchases of Rs 2,230 crore in 2004-05.

The government is working on a set of regulations by which distribution companies must have a mix of conventional and non-conventional power in their kitty. As part of its efforts to supply electricity of high quality free from disruptions to the residents of the State Capital, Jaipur Vidyut Vitaran Nigam has started installing 8 MVA power transformers at prime locations here. While the Delhi government has been talking of making the power sector competitive by permitting open access for domestic consumers, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), the power regulator, is perplexed at the poor response from stake holders for the public hearing on open access scheduled for June 27. Much below expectations, the Commission has received only about 20 to 25 comments of participants till June 17, the last date of submitting applications.
