CPM leaders in the Darjeeling hills continue to be at the receiving end of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha's anger, K.B. Wattar from Bijanbari being the latest in the line of fire. Morcha supporters have been demonstrating in front of Wattar's house since yesterday, demanding that he either quit the CPM, which is against a separate state, or leave the hills. "The Morcha harps on democracy, but at the same time its members intimidate our leaders in the hills,' Bengal urban development minister and CPM MLA Asok Bhattacharya said here today.

Sudheer Pal Singh / New Delhi July 21, 2008, 0:11 IST The growth in demand for power coupled with the lag in capacity addition has led to a worsening power deficit in June, according to the data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), an apex power planning and advisory of the central government.
AMIT GUPTA Ranchi, July 20: Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) owes Rs 800 crore to Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and is the only defaulter for the past couple of years. Top government sources said the matter was strongly raised during the July 18 review meeting of DVC by a consultative committee for ministry of power chaired by Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
The lesser inflow of water into rivers and the declining levels in dams and reservoirs across the southern, western and north-eastern regions of the country have led to a sharp decline in power generation, particularly hydro-power. The gas-based stations have also been under-performing due to shortage of fuel, leading to outages, power cuts and blackouts in many parts of the country.

Veeraswami on Friday announced that the scheme of "power holiday' will come into force from Monday. In Chennai, the supply would be disrupted for one hour a day. The city would be classified into eight divisions and each division would not have supply for an hour. Other municipal corporations and municipalities would have to go without supply for two hours.

(Nantu Dey) Raiganj, July 17: At least 80 entrepreneurs who had invested crores of rupees to set up small and medium scale industrial units in Raiganj are facing double blows. First, the investors could not start production even two years after they had opened the factories as the government-run power distribution company has not given connections. Second, banks have sent notices to these industrialists warning them that further defaults on the payment of installments would result in their property being impounded.
Though the state power minister, Mr Mrinal Banerjee today informed the House that by 2014, capacity of the generating stations will be enhanced by 3990 MW, his earlier promise of enhancing capacity is yet to be fulfilled. In 2006, the minister had stated in the house that the capacity of the generating stations under West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL) would be enhanced by 1570 MW in 2007. But, the capacity will be enhanced by 900 MW.
