Gov't warns low food self-sufficiency, global shortages may lead to drastic diet changes
Japanese could face a future eating only rice and potatoes with no meat because of growing global food shortages and an alarmingly low rate of food self-sufficiency, a government report said Friday. About 60% of food consumed in Japan is imported from countries such as the United States, China, Australia and Canada. If the global food crisis intensifies and results in a lower availability of food imports, Japanese would see a dramatic shift in their diets, the Agriculture Ministry white paper warned.

Vaccine gets clean bill of health
Report attributes death of infants to human error at Tiruvallur PHC THE measles vaccine administered to children in Tamil Nadu has been given a clean chit by the Central Drugs Laboratory at Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh. In its report submitted to the Union Health Ministry, the lab suggested that human error at the local level could have resulted in the death of four infants last month at Tiruvallur district. Samples of the vaccine had been sent to the lab following the death of children who had developed complications after receiving the vaccine shot.

US FDA Defends Safety Of Baby Bottle Chemical
The US Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday said it sees no reason to tell consumers to stop using products such as baby bottles made with a controversial chemical found in many plastic items. Norris Alderson, the FDA's associate commissioner for science, said although the regulatory agency is reviewing safety concerns about the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, "a large body of available evidence" shows that products such as liquid or food containers made with it are safe.
