India, US to push WTO talks
Dubai: In a renewed effort to achieve a global trade deal under Doha Round of multilateral talks, trade ministers of India and the US will meet next week to bridge differences on farm subsidies and opening markets for industrial and agricultural products. Sen panel report to be noncommittal on futures ban
An expert committee set up in March 2006 to study if futures trading influenced spot prices of agricultural commodities will neither recommend a ban nor favour continuing trading in essential commodities. "The report will be presented to the Minister of Consumer Affairs within two-three days, though it won't be a unanimous report,' said Abhijit Sen, chairman of the committee and Member (Agriculture) in the Planning Commission. Sharad Pawar, who is the Agriculture Minister, also handles Consumer Affairs.

Sen panel draft faces opposition
Some members in the Avijit Sen committee on futures trading have raised objections to the panel's suggestion that ban on the futures trading of wheat, rice, tur and urad should continue. These members are of view that this ban is not justified, considering the fact that there is no evidence of any link between price rise and forward trading.
