Govt to import 50,000 quintals of rice
Responding to food scarcities ahead of the festive season, the government is preparing to import 50,000 quintals of rice through Nepal Food Corporation to ease the shortage, a senior government official said. A committee led by Gyandarshan Udash, joint secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, recommended to the ministry to import rice from any country to improve the supply amid reports of acute food shortage in different districts ahead of major feasts.

WFP welcomes assistance for Sri Lanka
The United Nations World Food Programme welcomed a major contribution of US$17.8 million from the Government of Japan to assist millions of vulnerable people in three Asian countries including Sri Lanka. "WFP is truly grateful for Japan's leadership in addressing the global food crisis," said Eri Kudo, Officer-in-Charge of WFP's Japan Office. "This generous donation will help protect millions of people from being pushed deeper into poverty and hunger," he said.

WFP Country Director visits erosion victims in Haimchar
WFP Country Director in Bangladesh John Aylieff visited river erosion affected areas in Haimchar upazila in Chandpur yesterday. He was accompanied by WFP Deputy Country Director Edward Kallon and Programme Advisor Tariq Mehmood Awan. During the visit to affected areas bank in Telirmore, he was over whelmed to see the devastations caused by the mighty river Meghna. Panicky victims urged WFP officials to help stop the river erosion immediately and to give financial aid (stipend) to affected students.

Nepalese organise food drive campaign in Canada
Nepalese Canadian Association of Ottawa (NCAO) held a successful Annual Food Drive 2008. "This year's food drive campaign to benefit the Ottawa Food Bank achieved an extraordinary success by exceeding its goal of raising $10,000. The drive raised $12,000 worth of non-perishable food and cash for the Ottawa Food Bank," says a press release by NCAO.

Japan donates US$4.6 M food aid
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Sri Lanka welcomed a donation of US$4.6 million worth of rice and canned fish from Japan. The food will be used to feed 275,000 school children and 350,000 displaced and conflict-affected persons for three months in the most neglected areas of Sri Lanka.

Japan provides rice alleviating the food crisis in Sri Lanka
The Government of Japan has donated 5,685 tonnes of rice and 110 tonnes of canned fish for the distribution among the internally displaced people (IDP) returnees and economically affected people in the most insecure and marginalized areas of Sri Lanka. UN chief Ban Ki-moon called for a huge rise in food production Tuesday as world leaders started a summit on the food price crisis that threatens to plunge millions more people into poverty. The UN secretary general said food output had to rise 50 percent by 2030 to meet rising demand, increased finance for agriculture and the elimination of "trade and taxation policies that distort markets."

A United Nations summit on the global food crisis called on Tuesday for trade barriers to be reduced and food export bans scrapped to help stop the spread of hunger that threatens nearly one billion people. "Nothing is more degrading than hunger, especially when man-made," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told the Rome summit, where the United States and Brazil defended biofuel production from charges that it pushes up world food prices.
