In Court
spilling on oysters: The Far North District Council of New Zealand said it will spend US $3.6 million to reduce the risk of sewage spills in the environmentally sensitive areas of Paihia, Haruru Falls and Waitangi off its shores. This comes after local oyster farmers said they would sue the council for the 3,000 cubic metres of raw sewage leak, early this month, which reached the Waitangi river, closing beaches and shellfish beds. The spill went unnoticed for two days and also forced many oyster farms to close down. The oyster farmers demanded the government to step in since the council was unable to cope, but the government disagreed.
tiger in the dock: A Jhajjar court recently issued a notice to former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and seven other accused for poaching a blackbuck last year. The chief judicial magistrate (CJM) asked the eight, who are currently on bail, to appear in court on May 9. The notice was issued in response to a petition filed by the NGO People for Animals. The petition has sought the cancellation of their bail, claiming the bails were granted despite the magistrate's court having no jurisdiction to hear the poaching case.
