Electricity for 400 villages in Sri Lanka's North
Sri Lanka government is planning to provide electricity for 400 rural villages in the North during the next three years, Minister of Power and Energy, W.D.J Senaviratne said. Minister Senaviratne added that this would be another step of "Uthuru Wasanthaya" program introduced by the government to develop the Northern region of the country.

Appoint a special committee to curb dengue in Sri Lanka - GMOA
The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) today urged the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa to immediately appoint a special committee to suppress the spreading of dengue. Dr. Upul Gunasekara, the Secretary of the GMOA said that appointing a committee is vital at this moment as the dengue fever is spreading throughout the country in epidemic proportions.

School closed due to a suspected hepatitis infection in Sri Lanka
The Central College in Eheliyagoda, Ratnapura has been closed until further notice due to a hepatitis scare. According to the sources nearly 25 school children and several teachers in Eheliyagoda Central College have been admitted to Awissawella hospital due to the suspected hepatitis. However their condition is not critical, hospital sources confirmed.

More steps to control dengue in Sri Lanka
The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has decided to take legal action against those who dispose of garbage along the streets of Colombo from June 15. In a statement, CMC said they would also take legal action against people who allow the creation of environments conducive for the breeding of dengue mosquitoes, so as to control the rapid spread of the disease.

Eleven people and 79 elephants killed during the year in Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan authorities today said that at least eleven people and 79 elephants have died in human-elephant conflict during the year. Environment Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said today said that remedial measures are being taken to counter this phenomenon. In many recent cases, wild elephants stormed villages near the jungle, mostly in the Central and Eastern Provinces.

50 students hospitalized due to food poisoning in Sri Lanka
A group of school children in North Central Sri Lanka has been admitted to Ampara Hospital due to a food poisoning incident. Police Spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said at least 50 students of a school in Moragollagama in Kekirawa were admitted to the hospital.

Sri Lanka had advised its farmers in the Mahaweli zones to cultivate only 50 percent of their paddy lands in this season due to lack of water in the major reservoirs as drought conditions continue to prevail. The Sri Lanka Agriculture Ministry has issued this instruction through the Farmer Organizations at the cultivation meetings for the 'Yala' season.

Swine flu scanners are back at Sri Lanka's International airport
Thermal Scanners that were used to scan people for possible infection with swine flu (H1N1 virus) and failed to operate before have been reinstalled at the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake after repairs. A spokesman for the Health Ministry said that the scanners had been sent to Singapore for repair and they were returned on Wednesday night.

Sri Lanka to introduce Dengue Breeding Act
Amidst continuing reports of rising dengue cases in the country, Sri Lanka is to present a new Dengue Breeding Act in the Parliament on May 5 in order to take tough action against such breeding places. The act would empower the Health Ministry to take action against people whose negligence facilitates the breeding of the dengue mosquito.

Sri Lanka to amend Disaster Management Act
Sri Lanka has decided to amend the Disaster Management Act soon, the Disaster Management Centre said. A spokesman for the Centre said that it has decided to amend the Act due to the practical difficulties in the Act. The Act was enacted in 2005 following the tsunami disaster that ravaged the island in 2004.
