Sri Lankan government has taken extensive measures to promote the fishing industry in the North to uplift the lives of the fisher community in the former war-torn areas. Under the Uthuru Wasanthaya development programs of the North, the government plans to restart the ice production plant and the canned fish production factory at Pesalai in Mannar.

Dengue cases in Sri Lanka over 24,000
The total number of dengue cases in Sri Lanka has risen to 24,084 during this year, the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry said today. According to the statistics released by the Epidemiology Unit, 245 people have died due to the disease during the same period.

Government to pay compensation for flood damaged houses in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka government has decided to pay compensation for houses damaged by the recent floods in the Kalutara and Ratnapura districts. The Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services said that nearly 60 houses in these two districts have been damaged by the floods.

Forest fire burns in Sri Lanka hill country
A forest fire broke out yesterday at the Knuckles Forest Reserve in the hill country of Sri Lanka. Ududumbara police said the fire which started last night due to dry weather in the forest range is spreading. The police and the Forestry Department has taken measures to douse the fire, but had not succeeded yet due to the dry weather conditions.

First patient infected with Influenza A-HINI inside Sri Lanka found
Sri Lankan health officials have found the first patient infected with the Influenza A-HINI (formerly Swine Flu) virus inside the country. Dr. Anura Senanayake, the Director of the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) at Angoda confirmed that this patient was admitted to the hospital this morning.
