New solution to Sri Lanka's garbage problem
Sri Lanka's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources today warned the local governments that the Ministry will take over its lands that are being used to pile up garbage on a large scale if the garbage is not disposed. Environment Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said the cabinet approval has recently granted approval for this process.

New loan scheme for Sri Lanka milk farmers
Sri Lanka government is planning to introduce a new loan scheme to the farmers engaged in dairy industry throughout the country. Mervyn Gunasena, the chairman of the Agrarian Insurance Board said the main goal of this decision is to develop the liquid milk industry and to raise the liquid milk production in the country.

Dengue fever spreading once again in Sri Lanka
Mosquito-borne Dengue fever is spreading once again in Sri Lanka with a sharp increase in the number of patients, Sri Lanka health officials today said. Dr. Prabha Palihawadana, the Director of the Epidemic disease Unit of Health ministry said that 2,400 dengue cases have been reported within the last two months.

Sri Lankan delegation to conduct feasibility study on disaster preparedness in Sumatra
Five countries including Sri Lanka are to send their delegations to conduct a feasibility study on the disaster preparedness in Padang, West Sumatra. Two delegates from each of the five countries, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and Maldives, will participate at this meeting, executive director of the Indonesian Tsunami Alert Community (KOGAMI), Patra Rina Dewi said.

Sri Lanka parliament approves Environment Conservation Levy on mobile phones
Sri Lanka parliament today approved the Environment Conservation Levy on mobile phones by a majority of 46 votes. Total number of 57 MPs casted their votes in favor of the levy and only 11 parliamentarians were against it. Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has opposed the new levy on mobile phones and main opposition United National Party members were absent for the voting.

New project to protect the wetlands in Colombo vicinity
Sri Lanka Ministry of Environment is to develop the wetlands around the parliament and in Battaramulla area as urban gardens. According to the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Patali Champika Ranawaka this project is to be implemented under the programme of Green Circle introduced by the Ministry.

Rat fever takes 181 lives in Sri Lanka
Health Ministry statistics said 181 persons died of leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever, so far this year in Sri Lanka. Another 5,994 people have caught the disease.

Two million Sri Lankans are diabetic
National Diabetes Centre of Sri Lanka (NDC) says that nearly two million Sri Lankans suffer form diabetes. According to the International Diabetes Federation's Diabetes Atlas, 8.4% of Sri Lankans currently live with diabetes. By 2025, 10.7% of the population will have the disease. The organization says wrong food habits, obesity, stress, and lack of exercises are the main causes of the disease.

Five hundred cows from Australia for Sri Lanka's National Livestock Development Board
Sri Lanka National Livestock Development Board has planned to import 500 cows from Australia next year. These cows are the first batch of the 15,000 cows needed to be imported to achieve the target of increasing the country's milk production by 50%. The imported cows are to be given to farmers and farms country wide.
