Floods in Eastern Sri Lanka displace people
As a result of the continuing heavy rains several areas in the Batticaloa District, in Eastern Sri Lanka have been severely flooded. The Disaster Management Center (DMC) of Sri Lanka said that most of the families at Kaththankudi, Ariyampathi, Wellawalai and Eravur have been displaced due the floods. All the main roads in those areas have also been blocked due to the floods, the DMC added.

Twister damages 103 houses in Sri Lanka
A twister that blew across the Bulathsinhala area in Kalutara last night damaged at least 103 houses. The Disaster Management Center said that 89 houses have been completely destroyed and others were partially damaged.

Cabinet subcommittee to provide relief to drought affected persons in Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan government has appointed a cabinet subcommittee to provide immediate relief to drought affected persons in various parts of the country. Cabinet of Ministers who met last night under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Samarasinghe to lead the subcommittee.

25 Villages in Northern Province to get electricity
Sri Lanka Ministry of Power and Energy has implemented a speedy program to provide electricity to 25 villages in the Northern Province that have no power supply yet. According to the Minister of Power and Energy, W.D.J. Senaviratne, only the cities in the Northern Province have received power supply until now.

The residents as well as devotees in Kataragama, one of the sacred cities in Sri Lanka are hit by a severe drought once again. According to the sources the entire region has not received the expected rains on time and it has resulted in this severe drought in the area.

Japan funds hospital project in Sri Lanka
The government of Japan today signed a grant agreement with Sri Lanka to provide Rs. 9.2 million to establish a mew maternity and dental units at the Dambana Hospital in Badulla District.

Another death from rubella vaccination in Sri Lanka
Another school girl who was administrated with rubella vaccine has died last night after being admitted to Kurunegala hospital. According to the police, three students from Wariyapola area has been admitted to Kurunegala hospital last evening due to severe headaches and other symptoms after administration of rubella vaccine.

Construction of coal power plant in Eastern Sri Lanka to commence soon
A USD 500 million joint venture of Sri Lanka-India for the construction of a coal power plant will commence in Sampur, Trincomalee on November 10, Power and Energy Ministry revealed. The power purchase agreement with regard to the joint venture will be signed in Colombo at the end of this month.

During the period of last week no patients affected by Novel Influenza A/H1N1 have been treated at the IDH indicating a significant decline in the number of affected persons, IDH, Director Dr. Anura Senanayake said.

Bushfires destroy 4,000 acres in Sri Lanka Hill country
Nearly 4,000 acres of forest reserve at Horton Plains in Sri Lankan Hill country has been completely destroyed by the blazing bushfires. The District Secretary of Nuwara Eliya confirmed that the bush fires which started from Ohiya area has already spread to the Horton Plains reserve few days ago.
