Sri Lanka takes measures to curb Swine Flu epidemic
Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health Care and Nutrition has ordered 380,000 doses of Novel Influenza A / H1N1 (Swine Flu) vaccine to curb the spread of the disease. Addressing a media briefing the Health Minster Nimal Siripala de Silva said the World Health Organization has agreed to provide the vaccine at his request.

Sri Lanka Health Ministry orders H1N1 vaccine amid rising death toll
Sri Lanka's Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry has placed an immediate order for the WHO approved Novel Influenza (A) H1N1 vaccine amid the rising death toll from the epidemic. Adding to the death toll rising alarmingly due to the rapid spread of A/H1N1 another death was reported yesterday evening from Kurunegala.

Sri Lanka planning to import H1N1 vaccine
Sri Lanka health authorities are discussing with the World Health Organization (WHO) officials to import the Influenza A/H1N1 vaccine, Health Ministry sources said. Pandemic influenza A/H1N1 is spreading in the country and there had been 132 confirmed cases to date according to the Epidemiology Unit.

Flood threat rises in Southern Sri Lanka
The government authorities have warned the residents of the city as well as the devotees to the most sacred Kataragama city in Southern Sri Lanka to be vigilant as the water level of the famous Menik River could rise tonight. According to the irrigation officials of the area the sluice gates of the Veheragala Tank could be opened to night as its water level has already risen to spill limits.

Dengue figures increased in several districts; Sri Lanka health Ministry warns public
According to recent statistics it has been revealed that the number of dengue patients in the Colombo, Gampaha, Matale and Vavuniya districts has increased once again in the month of October, compare to the September figures, Dengue Control Unit Consultant Community Physician Dr. Nimalka Pannilahetti said.

Sri Lanka's fisheries industry is booming
The Fisheries Ministry is planning to increase fish production by introducing new technology and gear required to fish in deep seas, said the Fisheries Minister Felix Perera addressing a press conference at the Media Ministry of today. He further said that all fisheries harbours will be upgraded with adequate storage facilities and berthing facilities to meet the future demand.

Government to compensate victims of drought in Eastern Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed to provide adequate compensations to the farmers who are affected by the existing drought in Ampara District, Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said. The farmers in the area have been experiencing heavy losses due to the prevailing drought as their economy is highly depended on the agriculture.

Sri Lanka confirms its first H1N1 flu death
Sri Lanka's Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry today confirmed that the death of 16-year old boy in Kandy was due to the complications from the Influenza A-H1N1 commonly known as Swine Flu. This is the first death reported in Sri Lanka due to the H1N1 since the first H1N1 flu case was reported on June 16. Over 100 patients have been detected with the flu since then.

Sri Lanka considering nuclear power programme
Sri Lankan government is considering to develop a nuclear power programme to meet the country's growing power demand. The Cabinet of Sri Lanka today approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Power and Energy, W.D.J Senaviratne to make a policy decision to consider Nuclear Power as an option for meeting the future energy demand of Sri Lanka.
