PANJIM: The quarterly meeting of TB forum of the Voluntary Health Association of Goa on Monday identified five villages where steps would be taken to create awareness about tuberculosis and help villagers to move towards elimination of the disease. The villages are Parra, Karapur-Sarvan, Pariyem-Sanquelim, Betki and Carambolim. Executive Director VHAG Dr Cynthia Pinto said these villages have been identified under Axshya project, which was implemented in Goa in 2011 to improve the reach, visibility and effectiveness of the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) through civil society.
CORTALIM: Contrary to claims by Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) of minimal environment impact on its expansion projects, the New Delhi-based Centre for Science & Environment has alleged several flaws in the MPT’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report. CSE has highlighted the shortcomings in the EIA for the controversial 7.2 MMTPA Iron Ore Export Terminal West of Breakwater, in its technical analysis at the request of local activist Savio Correia.
PANJIM: Pilerne Citizens Forum, while refusing to accept the draft Goa Khazan Land Development Board Act, 2012, alleged that the proposed bill, with unwarranted powers of ownership, sale and development of khazan land vested in the board, is a move towards commercializing fertile agricultural lands. PCF has threatened to come on the street if the government fails to adopt proper procedure before introducing the Bill and that State government’s move to introduce the bill haphazardly, is basically to secure “vested interests.”
MARGAO: Violations of parking norms with impunity figured prominently at the meeting of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) on Tuesday, with members unanimously underlining the need for strict enforcement of parking rules. The meeting rejected a couple of building project files for want of adequate parking. The builders will be asked to come out with a revised plan taking into account parking requirements. The meeting saw members calling for stringent implementation of parking rules in the commercial capital to create adequate space for parking. This follows the irregularities detected by a PDA team which inspected some of the building projects in the pipeline in Fatorda.

PANJIM: Goa State Pollution Control Board has rejected the renewal of ‘Consent to Operate’ applications of 107 mining leases, and returned them to the respective firms stating that the Board cannot proceed in view of Supreme Court ban on mining operations in Goa. The mining lease operators had applied for renewal of Air and Water consent, which expired on July 31, 2012. Speaking to HERALD GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said that Board had rejected renewal of consent and accordingly all applications were sent back to the firms. “Since Supreme Court has currently halted all mining operations in the State and the matter is pending, at least till January, next year, the Board cannot go ahead with the renewal,” he said.
