KARWAR: Karnataka Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar on Wednesday remained noncommittal on demands to resume the sand trade from Kali River to Goa, stating that he had to discuss the issue with senior officials. Addressing a large gathering at Tagore Beach, here, after inaugurating the new bus stand and laying the foundation stone for many projects at Karwar, Shettar said: “It is difficult to take any immediate decision on the resumption of Kali River sand transportation to Goa, as requested by Fisheries, Science & Technology Minister Anand Asnotikar.”
PANJIM: Alleging that the Goa Foundation (GF) had "tarnished their image" in connection with the excess iron ore production case which now stands to be withdrawn, mining firms have written to Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) demanding "compensation". The 42 mining firms which were accused of excess production by GF, in their reply to the GSPCB, demanded that the show-cause notices issued to them be withdrawn claiming that GF has withdrawn its complaint.

MARGAO: South Goa District Collector N D Agrawal on Tuesday said that teachers have a pivotal role to mould students and ensure a tobacco free society. Speaking at the district level workshop on Tobacco Free Educational Institutions at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, Agrawal said teachers play an important role in grooming the students and help contain use of tobacco in educational institutions. “You have the responsibility to make the society tobacco free. I expect the teaching community to take time bound decisions which would make Goa Tobacco free”, Agrawal said in his inaugural address.
MARGAO: After its previous attempt coming a cropper for want of awareness and logistical support, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to give yet another try to make the commercial capital plastic free. Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Arthur D’Silva said the civic body would give around a month’s time to the city’s shopkeepers and business establishments to dispose off their plastic bags stocks by January 26 next year. “One month’s time will be sufficient for the traders and shopkeepers to use the plastic bags and stop the sale of plastic bags thereafter”, Arthur said.
MARGAO: A day after directions were issued to the South Goa district Collector to seal the premises in plot Nos L-2 and L-3 in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, the Goa State pollution Control Board (GSPCB) is mulling criminal proceedings against the occupants for allegedly handling hazardous wastes dumped on the plots. The GSPCB on Tuesday dispatched messengers to serve the directions to the District Collector and the IDC field officer to initiate action at the ground level to ensure a total stop to waste handling in the two plots.
PANJIM: The contentious cessation of mining operations in Goa will figure at the National Development Council (NDC) meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on December 27, wherein Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar would bat for an early decision on environment clearances (ECs) to mining leases, currently suspended by the Ministry of Environment and Forest. Addressing a press conference on Monday, Parrikar said that since the ECs issue is with Union government, I would take up with the matter with Dr Singh, and request him thrash out an urgent solution, rather than wait for the Supreme Court’s verdict.
PANJIM: Over 5000 mining-dependent people under the banner Goa Mining Peoples’ Front (GMPF) are expected to lay siege on the Capital City on Tuesday and march from Kadamba Bus Terminus, protesting against suspension of mining operations and demanding immediate resumption of legal mining in Goa. GMPF claims that the rally would be historic one with more than thousands participating in the rally that will culminate in a public meeting at Azad Maidan. MLAs from the mining belt along with other political leaders are likely to be present, Christopher Fonseca of GMPF informed.
PANJIM: Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) on Monday said that the party always supported and would continue to support legal mining in Goa, even in future. Speaking on behalf of the party Monday, PWD minister Sudin Dhavalikar shied away from queries on mining, on a day when the party opened its new office at St Inez.
PANJIM: Just a day before, the mining-dependent people are set to march on the streets of Panjim, to protest the suspension of mining operations, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Monday, offered sops to them, declaring that he would initiate several schemes for their welfare beginning January 2013. In a hard hitting declaration, Chief Minister warned that only 8500 trucks, presently registered with Directorate of Mines and Geology, would be permitted to transport ore, when mining eventually resumes in the State. Mining company trucks too would be granted permission to transport ore.
