MARGAO: The Cuncolim Municipal Council on Monday issued a show cause notice to a ferroalloy unit at the industrial estate for filling an excavated area allegedly with hazardous waste behind the Cuncolim Industrial Estate. Chief Officer Shivaji Dessai issued the show cause notice following an inspection carried out of the area by the council headed by Chairperson Devendra Dessai along with Councillors this morning.
MARGAO: In an interesting development over the handling of 25,000 tons of hazardous waste at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, the Goa State Pollution Control Board on Monday directed South Goa District Collector to seal the premises at Plot no L-2 and L-3 at the Industrial estate. In an order issued on Monday evening, GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha revoked with immediate effect the Consent to Establish (NOC) ordered dated March 1, 2012 issued by the Board to Ms The Axis for the establishment of a unit to manufacture cement products at Plot No-3 at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
Hospicio bio-medical waste management once again came under scanner after waste stacked in plastic bags was found dumped within the hospital premises on Sunday. The hospital management has been resorting to the deep burial method to dispose of the bio-medical waste generated in this government district hospital. However, waste including used syringes and needles were scattered around the place on Sunday raising doubts about the efficacy of the system in place.
PANJIM: While maintaining that the Goa Khazan Land Development Board Bill, 2012, has been drafted to benefit land sharks for real estate, Pilerne Citizens Forum (PCF) has threatened to come on streets if government goes ahead with the proposed bill without taking local bodies into confidence. The Forum has also warned Manohar Parrikar-led government not to play with the emotions of the people, recalling that these are the same Goans who brought political change by giving a drubbing to erstwhile Congress government’s corrupt regime.
PONDA: Environment Minister Alina Saldanha has urged people to act responsibly to solve the growing garbage problem in the State. She was addressing a function at the Goa Vidhyaprasarak Mandal’s (GVM) plastic-free campaign at Ponda on Thursday. As part of the drive, students from the GVM’s schools were asked to collect plastic waste generated at their homes. The idea behind such a drive was to prevent plastic waste being thrown in the open. Mass plastic waste collected over three months was taken to A J de Almeida School, Ponda, on Thursday.

But, the civic body has a long way to go in tackling tons of waste generated in the commercial capital, reports Guilherme Almeida After a bitter experience with Komex International and Hyquip Ltd, Margao Municipal Council’s solid waste treatment plant has finally taken shape at Sonsodo. Fomento Green has commissioned its waste treatment plant at the site as per the concession agreement with the Margao civic body. But, a host of issues remain unresolved, including door-to-door waste collection, landfill site for the residual waste, capping of existing waste, consultant to certify work at the plant and to guide the civic body in signing the modified agreement with Fomento Green.
MARGAO: A surprise inspection conducted by a team of Goa State Pollution Control Board and IDC officials confirmed the worst fears as 25,000 tons of hazardous waste was found dumped haphazardly at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate. The team also inspected the controversial fish meal plant and collected water samples for investigations. A visibly agitated GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha warned of prosecution of a representative of Ms Axis Ltd, even as he directed the company representatives to remain present in his office at 11.30 am on Monday for further action on the hazardous waste.

BICHOLIM: In an unusual incident, the Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) on Thursday decided to postpone a felicitation function after bowing to protests from mining workers in the area. BMC had decided to felicitate four persons, including environmentalist Ramesh Gawas, but the decision to felicitate Gawas angered the mining workers from Bicholim. A group of angry mining workers went to the BMC office and submitted a memorandum, strongly opposing BMC’s move to felicitate Gawas after alleging that “he was against the commencement of mining activities in the State.”
