BARRACKPORE (North 24-Parganas), May 6: Residents of Harishpur village have been forced to earn their livelihood by begging as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) failed to improve their lives. Harishpur, which is under Mamudpur gram panchayat near Naihati is one of the most backward villages in North 24-Parganas. The village, which is largely inhabited by Adivasis (Tribals), has 300 families living there. Developmental activities have not been seen for these people who are struggling for their existence.

State BJP is organising a farmer's rally in Bhandara district of Eastern Vidharbha on May 3 to highlight the problems of paddy growers in the area. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, state BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said that senior BJP leader L K Advani will be addressing this rally in Bhandara's Sakoli area. Advani, along with party General Secretary Gopinath Munde, other parties MP and legislators will address the paddy growers' rally to resolve their various issues.

Mahishadal: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today asked the gathering at a rally here if they wanted a shipyard in the region. The answer, from the largely CPM audience, was "yes'. "If the factory comes up, thousands from the region will get jobs. You tell me, do you not want the factory?' the chief minister asked. A Trinamul-led committee has been formed here to resist the acquisition of around 500 acres for the shipyard, to be built by an Apeejay Group-Bharti Shipyard joint venture. None of the CPM's Left Front partners attended the meeting.
