The state government has commenced three new health programmes from Tuesday on a pilot basis at Bhadrachalam and Khammam. The projects include Sishu Sanjeevani (special care for newborn babies) to cut down on infant mortality rate; Akshya project (nutrition rehabilitation centres for thousands of children with malnutrition); and Ammakulana (support for mothers) a screening programme for pregnant mothers. Elaborating on project funded by National Rural Health Mission, which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister on Tuesday, Praveen Prakash, commissioner of health and family welfare said, “Under the Sishu Sanjeevani project, 44 special care units for newborns will be flagged off in Teaching, Area and District Hospitals.
New Delhi The Supreme Court has transferred to itself a petition filed by a leading chewing tobacco manufacturer against the ban on sale of gutka and paan masala. Gutka manufacturers have moved various high courts questioning the constitutional validity of the notifications issued by various state government. The manufacturers are insisting that gutka cannot be treated and regulated as ‘food’ as it has “no nutritional value” and highlight the “discriminatory nature” of the ban that has brought their business to a “complete halt”.
In a dubious distinction, Rajasthan has topped the list of states with kids being born underweight. In about nine states in northern, central and eastern India, where nearly half of the country’s population lives, a quarter of the children born in 2010-11 were underweight, that is, less than 2.5kg in weight at the time of birth. In Rajasthan, the proportion was as high as 39% with Jharkhand not far behind with about 36% children born underweight. In Madhya Pradesh and UP about 28% of newborns are underweight while in Bihar and Odisha about 22% fall in this category.
PANJIM: The head of government’s opinion that the food is sub-standard and not fit to even feed animals and the leader of opposition’s statement that students refuse to eat the meals and nearly 60 to 70 per cent of the food is thrown out, is serious rebuke to highlight the abysmal quality of food supplied to children under the midday meals scheme in Goa. Rancid food, lizards and foreign objects in meals which have regularly dogged the scheme intended to keep children in school, is evidence of a good scheme gone horribly wrong to the extent that students may now stay out of school, just to avoid the revolting food served to them.
