Bandipur hit by water scarcity
With animals in the Bandipur National Park (BNP) facing hardship due to acute scarcity of water, triggered by a bad drought, the Forest department has started supplying water to the partially dried-up water bodies inside the BNP. Wild animals, particularly elephant, tiger, deer and bison, are struggling to slake their thirst as there is water only in 15 of the 282 tanks/lakes inside the Bandipur National Park. Acute water shortage has forced several animals to migrate to the backwaters. But, even that region is facing water crisis.

Brazen groundwater extraction bleeds drought-affected state
Maharashtra is one of the first states to have regulated its groundwater resources. However, two decades after it introduced a law banning sinking of private borewells or deeptube wells within 500 metres of a public drinking water source, brazen extraction of water continues, even in the 16 drought-hit districts of the state. This is reflected in the fact that 195 of the state’s 1,531 watersheds lie critically depleted, according to the state’s Groundwater Surveys and Development Agency (GSDA). State seeks Rs.7,888-crore package as drought relief
Adoor Prakash submits memorandum to Sharad Pawar The State government has submitted a memorandum to Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar seeking a special package of Rs.7,888 crore to help the State tide over the prevalent drought conditions. The government had declared the entire State drought-hit on December 19, following which a series of discussions were held at the district level under the leadership Ministers designated to look after each district. The memorandum, prepared on the basis of ground-level assessment, sought Rs.5,810 crore as compensation for crop loss.
