Deficient rainfall in many parts of the country has started showing stress on the progress of sowing of kharif crops. As of the first week of July, the sowing of paddy, the major food grain crop of the season, was down by about 25 per cent compared to last year, according to latest figures released by the Ministry of Agriculture. Sowing of oilseeds was down by almost 50 per cent.
Mumbai: To expedite projects that could curb flooding in Mumbai, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee increased the allocation for the Brihanmumbai storm water drain (Brimstowad) project in the current fiscal year from Rs200 crore, earmarked during the interim budget, to Rs500 crore.
With the onset of monsoon, Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district was experiencing heavy rains for the fifth day today disrupting power and potable water supply, official sources said. The uninterrupted rains created havoc in this tribal-dominated district as more than dozen power poles were uprooted and overhead wires were also snapped due to falling of trees at Rapa town.
Despite arrival of Monsoon, Madhya Pradesh was yet to experience adequate rains so far and the state received moderate to heavy rains in some areas in the last 24 hours, Regional Meteorological Department sources said today. The state, however, might receive heavy rains in two or three days as low pressure areas were being formed in Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea, the sources said.
Thanks to late arrival of the monsoon and the drought-like situation witnessed in most parts of the country, especially at the sources of production, prices of potato and onion to continue to remain high in the State till the arrival of fresh crops in October.
