Shillong: About 408 families from nine villages of Khatarshnong in East Khasi Hills district benefited from the five-year project on watershed management, carried out by Soil and Water Conservation, Government of Meghalaya, according official sources.
The links between ecosystem approaches to health, natural resource management and poverty reduction are being identified as important and relevant across an increasing number of disciplines and institutions. However, specific implementation guidance is scant.
Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change has shown that the earth temperature has increased by 0.74 degree C between 1906 and 2005 due to increase in anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. It is estimated that crop production loss in India by 2100 AD could be 10-40% despite the beneficial effects of higher CO2 on crop growth. Dynamics of pests and diseases will be significantly altered.
This recent study by SANDEE examines the link between stream flow, agricultural water use and economic returns to agriculture. Attempts to simulate the likely impacts of regeneration of a degraded forest catchment on stream flow and the consequent impact on irrigation tankbased agriculture in a downstream village.
This study provides an insight on the role of tropical forests in the functioning of watersheds and the affect on agriculture and farmers?. Its findings are of particular importance for policy makers across South Asia, where large populations use forests and water resources intensively.
This report reviews the current status of payments for watershed services in developing countries. It highlights the main trends in the evolution of these schemes, synthesising the available evidence on their environmental and social impacts, and drawing lessons for the design of future initiatives.
The most important water resources are wetlands like lakes and reservoirs. Apart from being sources of water, lakes are highly productive ecosystems. Coastal lakes like Chilika lake and inland lake like Ansupa lake, Orissa are very important water resources. Ansupa lake is the largest very old fresh water lake of Orissa. Realizing the importance of conserving the lake the State Govt.
This study was driven by two objectives: to develop a framework and methodology for assessing the outcomes of conservation-poverty reduction initiatives and to apply it to such initiatives in wetlands to understand conditions and methods that can support the integration or balancing of ecosystem
The availability and quality of clean water in many regions of the world is increasingly threatened by overuse, misuse and pollution. In this context, the relationship between forests and water is a critical issue that must be accorded high priority. This thematic study on forests and water was developed in the context of the Global Forest Resources Assessment programme.
Groundwater recharge and base flow using different investigated methods are simulated in the 15-ha Bukmoongol small-forested watershed located at the southern part of Korea. The WHAT system, PART, RORA, PULSE, BFI, and RAP software are used to estimate groundwater recharge or base flow and base flow index from the measured streamflow.
