Water quality trading is gaining traction in a number of watersheds around the world. It is a market-based approach that works alongside water quality regulation to improve water quality, providing flexibility in how regulations are met and potentially lowering regulatory compliance and abatement costs. The research identified 57 water quality trading programs worldwide.
Quantitative land evaluation procedures, namely USDA Land Capability Classification (LCC) and FAO Land Evaluation Procedure for Soil Site Suitability for various land utilization types have been used to assess the land suitability for different crops and for generating cropping pattern for kharif (summer) and rabi (winter) seasons in a watershed.

For as long as they can recall, Kol tribals in the Chitrakut district of Uttar Pradesh, depended on the forest for food and livelihood. The jungle was an old and trusted friend yielding nutritious mahua, anvla and chiraunji. Tribals could earn money by selling such forest produce and by plucking tendu leaves. But since the last five years, this tried and tested support system is crumbling.
The severity of fuel wood and fodder depletion has been recognized through the hot arid tracts of India, since 70% of rural folk are dependent on them. The intensive study done on Baordi - Bambore watershed indicated that the state of affairs are not the same, as they appear. In normal rainfall situation, fodder availability appears to be more than required.
The crop productivity in Siwalik rainfed areas including kandi belt of Jammu and Kashmir is very low. To improve the agricultural productivity of these areas, a holistic approach through watershed management project was introduced in early 1990 to manipulate land and water resources more efficiently for better crop production.
Land and water are the main natural resources vital for agricultural production system. About one-third of cultivated land is irrigated and remaining 85 million ha is under rainfed cultivation in the country. Also about 146 million ha is degraded land needing reclamation/management for optimal productive use. The increasing human population is the main cause for reduced availability of land.
Study on qualitative performance of different soil and water conservation measures was carried during 2004-05 in Daregaon watershed, which is located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state. Soil and water conservation structure namely continuous contour trenches, loose boulder structures, earthen nala bund and cement nala bund respectively were evaluated.
