Mining loss: Increase budgetary provision
BHUBANESWAR: The Society of Geoscientists and Allied Technologists (SGAT) maintained that meagre budgetary provisions for the Steel and Mines Department and inadequate inspecting and checking are among the reasons behind the uncontrollable increase in illegal mining and smuggling activities.

Little relief to farmers
BHUBANESWAR: Even though Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced interim relief for the farmers who suffered crop loss on account of erratic monsoon and caterpillars, no provision has reportedly been made for this in the first supplementary Budget. The supplementary Budget was approved by the Council of Ministers on Monday. No special provisions were made for agriculture, sources said.

NEC reviews NE development schemes
The North Eastern Council (NEC) has released Rs 214.64 crore of the total budgetary allocation of Rs 624 crore for various projects in the region. A review meeting chaired by the NEC Secretary UK Sangma at the council headquarters monitored the progress of sanction of schemes and release of funds by the council recently, an official statement said here.

The government is considering a law on the lines of the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act, which would have broad indicative targets, but not mandatory targets.

Health budget to increase three-fold
Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said the Treasury has agreed to increase the health budget three-fold to uplift the public health facilities to improve the quality of lives. Addressing the inauguration of the Nirogi Lanka project in Colombo, Minister de Silva said last year the health budget was Rs. 89,000 million; it will increase upto Rs. 267,000 million next year.
