Action for climate empowerment: guidelines for accelerating solutions through education, training and public awareness
The UN is stepping up efforts to support countries, policymakers, and civil society organizations in tackling climate change through better education, training and public awareness, and has issued new guidelines detailing how this can be done. Empowering societies and all relevant stakeholders is crucial to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to shape a climate-resilient future, and is crucial to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The new joint guidelines issued by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are designed to help implement so-called “Action for Climate Empowerment” (ACE) activities at the national level, and include information on how to mobilize financial resources. ACE covers the areas of education, training, public awareness, public participation, public access to information and international cooperation. Securing resources to implement ACE activities is one of the greatest challenges.
