Stress may lead to cancer

  • 14/09/2006

High levels of stress are known to cause diseases like hypertension, peptic ulcer and insomnia. But a group of scientists at the University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center, Houston (in the US) now claims that chronic stress can even encourage the growth of cancerous tumours.

The team of researchers found that human ovarian cancer cells injected into mice form tumours that grow more when the mice are exposed to chronic stress. The findings of the study have been published in the August 14 issue of the Journal of Cell Biology (Vol 174, No 4).
