China
Nearly 140 people were killed and over 20,000 injured due to floods in southern China this year. According to Red Cross officials this year's floods were not as devastating as last year's. This year's floods have destroyed tens of thousands of homes in five provinces - Zhejiang, Fujian, Guang-dong, Guangxi and Jiangxi.
Last year, the floods in China killed about 3,000 people, destroying 1.7 million homes and causing damage worth us $ 27 billion. Torrential summer rains in southern China are accompanied by deadly flooding. One of the reasons for this destruction is the excessive farming in China which has stripped the hills of vegetation that would trap rain water.
