COLOMBIA
In its prolonged fight against the drug Mafia, Colombia has launched a political offensive in Washington to request us $500m anti-narcotics aid over the next two years. If approved the aid would deepen the us government's gradual involvement in Colombia's 35-year war with rebel groups and would significantly increase the present anti-narcotics budget. Colombia is already the third largest recipient of us police and military aid with this year's budget estimated at approximately us $300 million, up from about us $100 million last year.
