Salmonella update: 228 sick in 23 states
Salmonella from fresh tomatoes has sickened 228 people in 23 states, federal health officials now say. Yesterday's tally stood at 167 people in 17 states. Reuters reports new infections were reported in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New York, Tennessee and Vermont. Texas and New Mexico have been hit hardest. Of those affected, 25 have been hospitalized. The outbreak, which apparently began in mid-April, is blamed on raw plum, Roma and round tomatoes grown in certain areas but not all. Here's the list of safe tomato-growing regions.
