China funds mega housing project
The Government yesterday entered into an agreement with the Chinese Government to initiate a mega housing project in the country. Over 130,000 housing units will be built island wide under this project which is fully funded by the Chinese Government.

Massive agricultural program in Kurunegala

Change lukewarm attitude, help control dengue
The number of dengue deaths has passed 127 and counting. The affected persons have exceeded 9000. In 2005 the number of patients that died from dengue was 28 while there were 5994 dengue patients.

Disaster assessment must for future projects
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) will make the Disaster Impact Assessment (DIA) report compulsory for all future development projects, Director General Major General Gamini Hettiarachchi said. He said this system will help identify suitable land for development projects and will also help to mitigate and prevent disasters to a greater extent.

Dengue cases rise to over 12,000
Latest Health Ministry statistics show that the number of dengue cases had risen to over 12,300 with 152 deaths. Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry sources said the Ministry was specially concerned with the situation in 68 divisional secretariats and was continuing with its ongoing measures to eradicate dengue and other mosquito borne diseases.

Wayamba: 29.1 percent water wasted - Minister
Almost 29.1 percent of the drinking water supplied to people in the Wayamba province go waste due to negligence. If there is proper water management it would obviate the need to open new water supply schemes in the Province, said Rural Industries and Self Employment Promotion Minister S. B. Nawinna.
