Environment and Natural Resources Minister Champika Ranawaka said at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark that South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is concerned about the adverse effects of climate change in the South Asia region and stressed that the region has made no contribution to Green House Gas emissions.

Dharma SRI ABEYRATNE The Government has appointed a Cabinet sub committee to look into the drought prevailing in certain parts of the country.
The Power and Energy Ministry has launched 2225 electrification projects at a cost of Rs. 5025 million to provide electricity to 15 percent of the population who are without this basic facility within the next three years. All remaining power projects will be completed by 2012 and this will cost an additional sum of Rs. 1650 million, Ceylon Electricity Board stated.
The Government has planned to provide safe drinking water to 100 percent of the urban population, 90 percent of the rural and 80 percent in the estate sector by 2016. Similarly, improved sanitation facilities are to be provided to 95 percent of the urban population, 85 percent of rural and 75 percent of the estate sector.
