Only multiple trips to dumps will rid city of waste, they say With continuing problems at landfill sites, the city’s garbage crisis seems to be getting messier. On Thursday, garbage contractors staged a protest in front of the office of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Rajneesh Goel demanding security for their vehicles. After meeting the garbage contractors, Mr. Goel announced the BBMP would form a squad of five officials who will manage the sites during night. They will be posted at the landfills on a rotation basis.

Three senior Congress leaders have criticised the State government for not admonishing the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike for its failure to remove garbage across the city. Speaking to presspersons, the former Chairmen of the Legislative Council B.K. Chandrashekar and Veeranna Mathikatti said that even the Karnataka High Court had to intervene thrice and went to the extent of saying it could be superseded. Mr. Chandrashekar said that though the government could dissolve the palike, it could neither supersede nor suspend it. He said Mayor Venkatesha Murthy, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleged that garbage could not be removed because of differences between two powerful Ministers, and that the officials were not cooperating with him to solve the problem.
Expressing concern over the Government’s negligence towards City’s garbage problem, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday directed the State to identify five more landfill sites to manage the waste generated by Bangalore in the future. Accepting the BBMP’s submission that it was the State government which had to identify the landfills, the court sought to know why the State was waiting for a request to identify landfill sites.

Contractors held accountable for garbage segregation After coming under fire from all quarters for hitting the headlines in New York Times for poor garbage clearance in the City, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Council on Tuesday approved 80 municipal solid waste disposal contracts worth Rs 305 crore. The Council also gave the nod for purchasing 400 acres of land, off Bagepalli near Chikkaballapur at Rs 6.75 lakh an acre for garbage disposal. It was decided to entrust the responsibility of land acquisition to Bhagirathi Enterprises through a general power of attorney. After verification of records, the resolution to buy land would be forwarded to the State government.
