  • NCPA help for tsunami - hit children

    The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) will implement a countrywide programme to upgrade the psychological and educational development of tsunami affected children. The main objective is assisting tsunami affected children to grow up as normal citizens in a healthy environment. The guardianship of all tsunami affected children have been granted to the NCPA by the Tsunami Special Regulation Act no.16 of 2005, a spokesman said.

  • Good Manufacturing Practices to village level

    Going by the Mahinda Chinthana policies under which one is the upliftment of the rural sector enterprises, the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) launched a programme to introduce its Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) scheme to the village level small and medium entrepreneurs through a series of awareness seminars. These seminars are conducted through Vidatha Resource Centers (VRCs) scattered islandwide.

  • SAARC nod for Food Bank

    The 15th SAARC Summit has placed food security high on its agenda with the promise of more state intervention including a SAARC Food Bank to help any Member State in case of exigencies. Foreign Secretary Dr. Palitha Kohona addressing media at the conclusion of Standing Committee meetings said that all Member States had reached a consensus on the concept of a SAARC Food Bank. Dr. Kohona added that a preliminary draft as a proposal would be forwarded to the Foreign Minister's meeting for further perusal.

    The United Nations World Food Programme welcomed a major contribution of US$17.8 million from the Government of Japan to assist millions of vulnerable people in three Asian countries including Sri Lanka. "WFP is truly grateful for Japan's leadership in addressing the global food crisis," said Eri Kudo, Officer-in-Charge of WFP's Japan Office. "This generous donation will help protect millions of people from being pushed deeper into poverty and hunger," he said.

  • Mini tornado hit Ambalantota

    A mini tornado hit Lunama in Ambalantota last afternoon completely damaging three houses and partially damaging three houses. According to the Disaster Management Centre, the tornado hit last afternoon around 12.30 p.m. travelling a distance of 50 km. A tree was uprooted blocking the road but it was cleared in the evening by the Disaster Management Centre. The Disaster Management Centre said the tornado had come from the direction of the sea and had later returned towards the seaside.

    From Bingiriya Corr.Most of the paddy and vegetable cultivators in the rural areas of the Kurunegala district complained they found it difficult to get quality seeds for their crops. Private companies that sell seeds do not provide good quality seeds although they assure farmers of the seed quality and charge high prices. Seeds that are available in the market were not of good quality, K. Somaratne the President of Small Farmers' Organization in Bingiriya told The Island.
