Use of plantation land for tourism activities The ecological impacts of the decision to allow construction of resorts and hotels in plantations will be assessed by the Kerala Forest Department. Minister for Forests K.B. Ganesh Kumar said here that the officials of the department would be asked to look into the possible impacts of the order on forest ecosystems and wildlife. The order was applicable only to private estates and officers stationed near these estates would be put on high alert. Night travel along forest routes to these estates would be regulated.
Washington An Indian tech-firm has won a whopping grant of over USD 450,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to set up eco-friendly and hygienic "eToilets", making public conveniences more accessible to the urban poor. Thiruvananthapuram-based Eram Scientific Solutions Private Limited was awarded the grant as part of the foundation's second round of 'Reinvent the Toilet Challenge' grants totalling nearly USD 3.4 million.

The L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd has finalised a unique “cantilever elevated design” for Metro Rail stations coming up in the city. In all, there will be 66 stations at 63 locations. Except for the three joint stations of Ameerpet (corridors I & III), Parade Grounds (corridors II & III) and MGBS (corridors I & II), all the other stations will be “cantilever stations” resting on only pillars in the middle with no side pillars. “This cantilever elevated station design is planned for the first time in India and is a rare engineering feat by L&T structural engineers,” said N.V.S. Reddy, managing director, Hyde-rabad Metro Rail.
