Bus ridership key to better city living
The ministry of urban transport is giving a major push to improve ridership in bus transport services across all major Indian cities by 2020. Delhi and Pune are targeting a ridership of 80 per cent, while Kolkata and Bangaluru are targeting 90 per cent each. Unfortunately, poor management and operational inefficiencies are resulting in a plummeting of public transport usage. A RITES survey has highlighted that by 2030, 52 per cent of the Indian public across cities will have switched over to cars and two-wheelers. Already, bus ridership in Delhi has come down from 60 per cent in 2000 to 40 per cent in 2008.

Labels must for GM food from next year
19 commodities are to be covered by the new labelling rule India might not have started growing genetically modified (GM) food crops, but it does import food products that contain GM ingredients. Consumers who buy them have no way of knowing what they contain. Recently, the department of consumer affairs, under the Union food and consumer affairs ministry, decided to take a corrective measure to help consumers make an informed choice. It mandated that all packaged food products containing GM ingredients should carry a GM label from January 1, 2013.

Flaws in MPT’s EIA report: CSE
CORTALIM: Contrary to claims by Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) of minimal environment impact on its expansion projects, the New Delhi-based Centre for Science & Environment has alleged several flaws in the MPT’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report. CSE has highlighted the shortcomings in the EIA for the controversial 7.2 MMTPA Iron Ore Export Terminal West of Breakwater, in its technical analysis at the request of local activist Savio Correia.

Capital subsidies for renewable energy, both off-grid and on-grid, have been abandoned in favour of some kind of generation based incentives or other financial instruments like soft loans in the case of off-grid solar in almost all parts of the world.
