  • Ministry plans to bring out national policy

    BY YOJNA GUSAI NEW DELHI Perturbed over repeated complaints of higher metal contents in ayurvedic and unani products by health regulatory agencies of countries like the UK, US, Canada and Singapore, the Union health ministry is now working on bringing out a national policy on the issue. Health ministry is working with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to formulate good manufacturing practise (GMP) regulations for country's more than nine thousand units involved in manufacturing ayurvedic and unani medicines.

  • Tobacco claims 5.4m a year worldwide: WHO report

    About 5.4 million people die every year across the globe due to tobacco consumption and the number will go over 8 million by 2030 if immediate steps are not taken, the World Health Organisation (WHO) report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008 said yesterday. At the launching ceremony of the report at a city hotel, it was also revealed that more than 80 percent of the tobacco victims would die in the developing countries alone by 2030 if tobacco control programme is not augmented by this time.

    Hyderabad July 31: The government as well as health experts are deeply concerned about young people of the country getting addicted to smoking. Recent research says that those who start sm king at a young age find it very difficult to quit the habit at a later stage. Smoking among teens and youth in India is increasing rapidly. It is estimated that the country is losing 90,00,000 jobs in a year because of deaths due to ill-effects of smoking. As per WHO statistics, five million people die each year in the world from diseases related to tobacco use.

The excessive presence of sulphate and fluoride cause hepatitis, teeth deformation in children, unhealthy bone development, stomach diseases, especially constipation, joints problems, drowsiness and fatigue. The amount of concentration in groundwater creates serious implications on vital organs of humans.

    Sarah Boseley Bill and Melinda Gates announced on Wednesday that they were joining Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, in a $500m campaign against smoking in the developing world. As smoking has become less acceptable and profitable in the rich world, tobacco companies have expanded in countries where there are few restrictions and little in the way of public health warnings. Each year five million people around the world die of smoking; by 2030, more than 80 per cent of them will live in low- and middle-income countries.

  • Anti-polio campaign launched in Gulshan

    The Gulshan Town administration will launch a two-day anti-polio drive from July 28. This was decided in a meeting presided over by TMO Shafiqur Rahman on Thursday. THO Dr Imdad, WHO representatives Dr Navid and Miss Erica, Unicef representatives Amir and Dr Shabbir, TFP Dr Abdul Malik and UC nazims attended the meeting.
