Lack of fencing in a portion has made corporation's job very difficult Two years back, the Corporation embarked on an ambitious project of providing scientific cover for decades-old garbage at its Vellaikkal dumping yard. It helped the Corporation from preventing environmental pollution, especially groundwater pollution. Under the project, over 10 lakh tonne of garbage scattered on the 110-acre of land, accumulated over 40 years, were heaped like a small hillock in one of the corners of the dump yard.

Even as he accepted Punjab’s case for enhanced allocation to augment the rural water supply system, as it faces the problem of presence of uranium, arsenic, and heavy metals in ground water used for drinking, Union Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday advised the State government to introspect and analyse its performance record on utilisation of previous grants for the purpose.

Almost three decades after deadly gases spewed out of the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, the Union Cabinet has finally approved the proposal to airlift 350 tonnes of toxic waste from the defunct pesticide factory site to Germany for safe disposal. Tuesday's Cabinet decision comes after attempts to dispose of the waste in several Indian plants were vociferously opposed by nearby residents. The Central government will pay Rs. 25 lakh to German firm GIZ to remove the waste.
Survivors of the Bhopal gas tragedy and some non-government organisations (NGOs) have decided to appeal in the second circuit court of appeals against the US court summary judgment which ruled that neither Union Carbide nor its former chairman, Warren Anderson, were liable for environmental remediation emanating from one of the world's worst industrial accidents. Interestingly, the state government, which had earlier promised to be an intervener in the case has done nothing so far, claims activists. Even after the recent judgement, the state government, reportedly, has made no announcement on whether it would be on the side of the victims who are fighting for justice.
There is stiff resistance to the latest US federal court order that neither Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) nor its former chairman Warren Anderson were liable for any pollution-linked claims by the victims of the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster and the non-government organisations working here for the cause of the gas victims are determined to go in appeal against this order. Reacting to the US district Court Judge John F. Keenan’s dismissal of the case on June 26, Rachna Dhingra of Bhopal Group for Information and Action said that is the fourth instance of dismissal.
The Centre for Science and Environment, in a report, has tore apart the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)’s projection of facade of development with an unrealistic budge. The report brings out the City’s failure to manage its sewage and precious water. CSE director Sunita Narain aptly puts it, “Bangalore is drowning in its own excreta.” Sunita was quick to emphasise that Bangaloreans were by no means “unique”. At the launch of the seventh edition of the CSE State of India’s Environment Report titled ‘Excreta Matters’, she said cities across the country were doing equally bad.
In yet another blow to the survivors of the Bhopal gas disaster, a US district court has dismissed a plea seeking to make Union Carbide liable for contamination caused by its pesticide plant in Bhopal.
