Technologies and methodologies for promoting sustainable and environment-friendly power generation methods through the use of coal were discussed by Indian and foreign delegates at a seminar organised at the Center for Research in Rural and Industrial Development here today. In his address, CRRID Director General, Prof SS Gill said 70 per cent of power generation in India is through coal, which caused a lot of pollution. Hence, there was a need to shift to clean, more efficient and less polluting generation methods. He said, “In the coming years climate change will have a serious effect on our lives and we need to seek solutions through better technology and cooperation with other nations.”
The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has stepped up efforts to pursue a “develop-educate-regulate” approach to spread awareness among public and for enforcement of regulatory requirements. An AERB official told Business Standard: “AERB, which is entrusted with the responsibility of developing and enforcing nuclear and radiation safety regulations in the country, has the mandate to keep the public informed on radiation and nuclear safety related matters. The Solar Independent Power Producers Association (SIPPA) has petitioned the Government not to go ahead with imposition of anti-dumping duty on Solar PV modules in the larger interest of the country and instead put in place a long-term policy to ensure best outcomes for the solar industry. Aeon Renewable Energy Solution, a newly-launched solar energy firm of Chennai-based Madurai Appu Chain of restaurants, plans to invest Rs 250 crore over the next three years on setting up 25 megawatt (Mw) of solar power generation capacity in Tamil Nadu. The company is planning to establish its presence in the retail solar power generation solutions for domestic and industry for captive use. The Madurai Appu Restaurant Group, which has been operational for almost 12 years now, has entered the solar energy industry at a time when the potential of the sector has increased with the government announcing the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2012, envisaging the generation of around 3,000 Mw from solar energy in three years.

Work on the Rs. 350 crore plant is expected to begin soon. A final decision on the company that would implement the project will be taken on Monday. The waste-to-energy technology is expected to provide help in converting the non-recyclable and combustible portion of the waste to electricity. It will also reduce the amount of material sent to landfills besides preventing contamination of air and water.
