Even as the district administration celebrated World Sanitation Day on Friday, it is rather interesting to note that 48.58 per cent of families of the district do not have toilet facilities in their houses. Only 51.42 per cent of families have toilets at their residences, according to the officials reports released in October, 2010.

KALPETTA: The leaders of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary Farmers' Welfare Committee (WWLSFWC) and Wayanad Prakruthi Samrakshana Samithi, an environmental organisation in the district, have welcomed the decision of the empowerment committee of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests for implementing the rehabilitation of the trapped farming communities inside the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Meghalaya government has sent a report to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights under the National Human Rights Commission stating that proper rehabilitation packages would be worked out to protect the children working in coal mines in Jaintia Hills.
