Mumbai/Ahmedabad, June 25: Amid fears of drought due to delayed monsoon, several parts of Western India received sporadic rainfall on Thursday with Met office forecasting favourable conditions for advance of southwest monsoon into Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Meghalaya, literally means the abode of clouds, is experiencing unusual scanty rain in monsoon. Since the onset of monsoon beginning on May 25, Northeastern States witnessed much less rainfall this year than the previous years.
Manipur State Government departments have earmarked financial resources to tackle a possible drought-like situation in the State. The cost of combating drought is estimated at Rs 4.41 crore to be spent by the agriculture department while the minor irrigation department is expected to spend about Rs 1.5 crore. The agriculture department has a total of approximately four lakh hectares of land.
The Maharashtra government is considering implementing a cloud seeding programme to boost rainfall this season. Though the monsoon is showing signs of revival, the state agricultural department is gearing up for the worst.
With the monsoon nowhere in sight in the northern region and people suffering due to the prolonged dry spell, parched fields of paddy are a common sight in Haryana.
Ludhiana: With the possibility of monsoon failure looming large, Punjab farmers are demanding another round of farm-loan waiver in the union Budget for 2009-10 besides credit at 4 per cent interest rate. The Budget is to be presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the Lok Sabha on July 6.
LUCKNOW: Lucknowites need to wait a little to avail forest department's scheme to provide `plantation at one's doorstep'. Though it has been in existence since August, 2008 the delayed rains have put it on hold for some time.
AHMEDABAD: Torrential rains lashed Saurasthra and adjoining areas on the second consecutive day on Wednesday even as the Met department predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Saurashtra, Kutch and Diu by Thursday evening. However, rains continued to play hide and seek in Ahmedabad, showing up only in the form of a light drizzle in the evening for a brief while.
