KOCHI: It seems that the direction given by the district administration to various agencies to take strict action against those polluting the Periyar has fallen on deaf ears. The Kerala State Pollution Control Board has served show cause notices to four companies for discharging effluents from their units in the Edayar industrial area into the Periyar during the Onam holidays.
THRISSUR: Two tuskers ran amok and blocked traffic on the NH-47 between Marathakkara, near here, and Chalakkudy for over 2 hours on Sunday. The incident created panic among the passengers who were stuck in various vehicles on the highway.
KOCHI: The groundwater Department is upbeat as the rain water harvesting programme introduced in the State four years ago has started yielding positive results with the groundwater level in several parts of the district showing signs of improvement. In Ernakulam district, the department had bored 62 observatory wells in the past two years to monitor the groundwater level.
KOCHI: The burial of an elephant, which reportedly died of anthrax in Perumbavoor on Thursday, has kicked up a controversy. There are allegations that the pachyderm was buried, near the Muvattupuzha river, unscientifically and could pose a threat of polluting the river, a source of potable water in the district.

A Satish PALAKKAD: Indiscriminate sand mining has been the bane of the Bharathapuzha. But, now a new trend has been spreading like cancer in the rural areas of Palakkad. The plummeting prices of coconuts and the lucrative returns from illegal sand mining vis-a-vis tapping of coconut palms have seen farmers cut down coconut palms and indulge in sand mining.
KALPETTA: With the season of butterfly migration nearing, nature lovers and experts are a worried lot. Mindless use of pesticides and chemicals for farming in the district causes widespread destruction of the butterfly population, according to environmentalists.
ALAPPUZHA: The ATREE, in association with the All- Kerala Houseboat Owners' Association, has organised a lake cleaning campaign on Thursday in the Punnamada lake and and the nearby canals.
KOLLAM: The Kerala Mineral Research Institute will be established at Chavara in Kollam.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Around 14.52 percent of the total area in the state is prone to floods. Alappuzha district has been identified as the most flood-prone district and Idukki is the least flood-prone area.
