Bs Reporter / New Delhi September 17, 2008, 0:45 IST Oil Minister Murli Deora said petrol and diesel prices would not be cut till crude oil prices fell to $67 a barrel, since the depreciation in the rupee against the US dollar had eroded gains from falling oil prices, which touched a 7-month low.
Rakteem Katakey / New Delhi September 16, 2008, 0:14 IST International crude oil prices have fallen over 33 per cent from their recent record highs and are projected to fall further towards $90 per barrel with the second hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico not causing as much loss of production as was initially estimated. Analysts expect oil prices to decline further in the next couple of months as production remains robust and demand for oil and oil products falls, especially in big consumers such as the US, China and Europe, in the face of global economic slowdown.
Paranjoy Guha Thakurta RATHER LATE in the day, the government is thinking of introducing a set of initiatives to better target subsidies on diesel, the most widely-used petroleum product. Bijith R / New Delhi September 08, 2008, 0:33 IST The road transport undertakings of various states will have to fork out over Rs 5,000 crore if the recommendations of the BK Chaturvedi Committee on dual pricing of diesel are accepted by the central government. This could put these loss-making undertakings under severe financial strain. The state road transport undertakings made total losses of over Rs 2,150 crore in 2006-07.
JAIPUR: The Rajasthan government has reduced value added tax (VAT) on diesel by two per cent, making the fuel cheaper by 60 paise per litre, and abolished the four per cent VAT on liquefied petroleum gas, reducing its price by Rs.13.42 per cylinder. However, the government has not provided any relief on petrol. Annual burden State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Singh Rathore told reporters here on Saturday that the decision would put an annual burden of Rs.250 crore on the State exchequer, with Rs.200 crore for diesel and Rs.50 crore for the cooking gas.
