GUWAHATI: The Opposition parties on Monday criticized the 2013–14 State budget presented by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in the Assembly and slammed it as ‘anti–people’. Reacting to the budget, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said, “It seems that the budget presented by the Chief Minister in the Assembly was prepared as per the directions of Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank (WB). Most of the schemes proposed in the budget are likely to be taken up with the help of loan money.”
Scheme announced in Union budget The move to purchase another 10,000 buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and enhanced support in the 12th Five Year Plan will give an impetus to the bus transport system in the State. Work on underpasses to create long-term assets The UPA government's flagship social sector programme — the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) — will now be able to create permanent infrastructure assets, giving the seven-year-old scheme providing livelihood to almost 5 crore families annually an altogether new direction. The rural development ministry has decided to include building railway underpasses under the ambit of NREGS. An official announcement is expected shortly.
The state Cabinet today gave its approval to introducing the Punjab State Cancer and Drug Addiction Treatment Infra Structure Fund Bill, 2013, in the coming Budget session of the state assembly. The Bill aims at creating a special fund for setting up infrastructure, including equipment, in selected hospitals for treatment of cancer as well as drug addiction. To facilitate NRIs (non-resident Indians) in getting their properties vacated, the Cabinet gave the go-ahead to the Punjab Rent (Amendment) Bill, 2013. The Bill will be tabled in the assembly during the Budget session. All properties on rent under an agreement will come under the purview of this new law.
Cabinet gives its nod after getting environment clearance The government today paved the way for resumption of mining operations in the state after obtaining environment impact assessment (EIA) clearance. The decision was taken by the Cabinet which met here today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. The Cabinet gave its consent to issuance of a letter of intent to applicants for grant of mining lease or renewal of old lease, enabling them to apply for EIA clearance and completing other formalities. The letter of intent will be issued at the directorate level in cases where government has agreed in principle to granting or renewing mining lease.
