Parliament debates climate change

After the ipcc report warning about the impacts of climate change on developing countries, India witnessed a slew of debates on the need for emissions reductions in the country. On May 8, a discussion was held in the Lok Sabha on global warming under Section 193 of the House rules.

Members expressed apprehensions over the hazardous fallout of global warming in India. Though the members were unanimous over possible impact of global warming, there were differences of opinions on whether India should accept emission caps.

c k Chandrappan of the Communist Party of India, who initiated the discussion, said melting of glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas could trigger floods in rivers like Brahmaputra and Ganga.
