USA: After three major accidents, it has stopped funding FBR; only one pilot FBR is functioning.

UK: Three accidents in its two FBRs led the country to abandon its millions-dollar research programme.

FRANCE: A pioneer in big FBRs, it closed down two prominent ones and converted them into research reactors. In one of its several accidents, one person was killed. No further spending on FBR.

JAPAN: Closed one of its two FBRs after a massive fire in its coolant channel. One of the two operated for only seven months. No further investment in FBRs.

INDIA: The pilot FBR attained criticality in 1985 with a capacity of 40 MW, but never operated above 10.5 MW. Due to several technological problems, it remained closed in 1987-89. Last year, it ran continuously for 53 days and that too below capacity. On the basis of this unsecured technology, the PFBR in Kalpakkam will be built
