Readers response

Very little is known about changes in climatic conditions. More so in India, given the state of scientific research. One way to study this is through observations of people about their local climate. Down To Earth carried out a survey on people's observations on climate change in 1999. The questionnaire, carried in the magazine for four issues in February and March, sought replies to one question:

l What kind of local/regional changes in climate patterns have you noticed? Has any specific climatic pattern typical to your region been affected?

We received a total of 93 responses from across the country, many of them lengthy articles accompanied by research material. In great detail, our readers revealed their awareness of their local environment. Respondents were from a wide range of backgrounds, including professionals like architects and physicians, housewives, journalists, farmers, teachers, professors, students, librarians, scientists, social workers, lawyers and conservationists.

We followed up on their views by sending reporters to several parts of the country. They met senior citizens who are chronicles of their region's history. These views were pitted against empirical information provided by specialists from various disciplines. This story shows the awareness levels of our readers. We thank them.
