Status report regarding the steps taken by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation to manage municipal solid waste management.
The report outlines the ongoing initiatives and progress made to address Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management, legacy waste bio-mining, to avoid open dumping at the Vellalore Dump Yard and the Odor issue along with the initiative taken for implementing new project proposals.
The report reflects the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation’s commitment to managing municipal solid waste, implementing sustainable solutions, and eliminating open dumping at the Vellalore yard. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has formed a Solid Waste Management Committee, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner and comprising 14 members (including Engineers, Assistant Commissioner and Sanitary Officers from all the zones). The committee oversees solid waste management operations at the compost plant.
The appointed Private Service Provider (PSP) collects waste daily and transport it to transfer stations at Ukkadam and Peelamedu. From there, waste is moved to the Vellalore Compost Yard using compactor bins from M/s. Coimbatore Integrated Waste Management Co. Pvt. Ltd. (CIWMCPL).
Similarly, a Committee has been formed to monitor the Vermi Compost Committee under the Chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner and consists of 17 officials (including Engineers, Assistant Commissioner and ZSO of all Zones) from CCMC to oversee the work of preparation of vermi compost plant which is currently underway. The current implementation process is under review, and amendments have been ordered. The officials would inspect whether the vermicomposting production at the Vellalore dump yard is being conducted properly. They will also examine the list of expenses incurred for the vermicomposting production work recorded and submit a report to the Commissioner through the Deputy Commissioner.
