Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding illegal sand mining posing threat to Rongai river, West Garo Hills district, Meghalaya, 30/01/2025
Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of News Item titled “Barricade illegal sand mining pose threat to WGH riverbank” appearing in The Shillong Times dated 29.06.2024 dated 30/01/2025.
The news report said that the iron barricade placed in the middle of the Rongai river and uncontrolled illegal sand mining activities in certain locations of the river at Chibinang in West Garo Hills District causes erosion and loss of land. Such activities also cause disposal of polluting matter to the stream/river making it unfit for human consumption and aquatic lives as well.
The eastern bench of the NGT, January 30, 2025 directed the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills and the Divisional Forest Officer, West & South West Garo Hills (T) Division, Tura, to file fresh affidavit showing what action has been taken on the second report of the Inspection Committee as well as the affidavit of the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills.
