Action taken report by MCD regarding a garbage dump near AIIMS, Delhi, 16/01/2025
Action taken report on behalf of MCD in OA No 250 of 2024 (Sudesh Prakash Sabberwal Vs. Union of India & Others). The report was in response to the NGT order, October 14, 2024.
The application was filed by the applicant with the grievance regarding removal of dhalao/garbage dump situated about 30 meter away from gate number 6 of AIIMS, New Delhi and is a major source of air pollution
The report by the MCD said that the dhalao near Ring road in South Extension Part-I is in existence for more than 30 years and is being used for collection of municipal solid waste/street sweeping waste of the nearby area having congested residential and commercial establishments. The dhalao is about 180 meter away from gate number 6 of AIIMS in opposite side of AIIMS and other side of Ring Road in South Extension-I for its further disposal to disposal sites. The daily generated municipal solid waste from nearby congested areas is being collected from each household every day.
The dhalao collects an approximate quantity of 12 to 14 MT of MSW. The collected waste is removed from this point by MTS vehicles through 2-3 trips per day as per requirement. The nearest FCTS from this dhalao is about 1.5 km away and the garbage of this dhalao cannot be diverted to the nearest FCTS due to the reason that there is heavy traffic on this route and shifting of garbage to the present FCTS would cause congestion.
Further, there is already a huge load of garbage collection at the FCTS site. The DPCC carried out inspection of the dhalao on October 8, 2024 and pointed out various deficiencies for which MCD has been directed to ensure some steps. The measures included proper entry gate on the dhalao to avoid unauthorised entry into the dhalao, proper roof to prevent rain water into dhalao and instead of dumping wet waste at the dumpsites, it should be composted among others.
