Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding dumping of garbage in Dardha river, Jahanabad, Bihar, 11/01/2024

Order of the National Green Tribunal (Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata) in the matter of In Re : Pollution level is increasing in the city due to dumping of garbage in Dardha River of Jahanabad, Bihar Vs State of Bihar dated 11/01/2024.

The Original Application was being taken up suo motu in view of a news published newspaper ‘Hindustan’ on November 26, 2023 mentioning that pollution level is increasing in the city of Jahanabad, Bihar, due to dumping of garbage in Dardha river.

The news report mentioned that dirty water from all the drains of Jehanabad city falls directly into the river. Apart from this, chemicals and medical waste from small domestic industries are also put into it. Further, no efforts were being made by the Bihar State Pollution Control Board to protect the Dardha river. Due to administrative laxity and lack of public awareness, many land mafias are involved in construction work on the river banks with some people building concrete right up to the river bed.

The NGT directed a notice to be issued to the Principal Secretary, Department of Environment, Bihar and Bihar State Pollution Control Board among others. The NGT also directed a two member committee comprising Senior Scientist, Bihar State Pollution Control Board and District Magistrate, Jahanabad to visit the site in question and submit its report within four weeks.
