Response by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board in Original Application No. 602/2022 Utkarah Singh Vs State of Uttar Pradesh in compliance of the NGT order, January 18, 2023. The matter related to encroachments around Chande Baba talab, Lucknow.

The Divisional Forest Officer, Awadh Van Prabhag, Lucknow has informed vide letter dated May 1, 2023 that 1000 saplings of different species will be planted along with iron tree guards near the pond. Till date 350 saplings have been planted and the remaining work is under progress which will be completed during the coming rainy season, in the month of July 2023.

The water samples of Chande Baba Talab was collected by the regional officer, UPPCB on December 30, 2022 and again on May 1, 2023. The analysis of the water samples showed that the water quality of the pond falls under category D.

Further, a drain carrying sewage of the nearby area was meeting in the pond without any treatment. A sample of the sewage flowing in the drain was also collected and analysed in the central laboratory of the SPCB. The results of the samples showed that the values of BOD, total coliform and fecal coliform are quite high and the dissolved oxygen has been found nil. "The untreated sewage of the locality is directly meeting the Chande Baba Talab which is deteriorating the water quality of the talab," the report to the NGT said.
