Report by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board on steps taken to check Adyar pollution, 25/01/2022
Independent report filed by Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSS) in the matter of Tribunal on its own motion-Suo Motu based on the news item published in the Times of India, Eenadu newspaper edition, April 15, 2021 "Squatters gone, but Cooum still a dump" and other news items on Cooum pollution.
CRRT Board has approved 56 sub-projects of short-term plan at a cost of Rs 555.46 crores to be implemented under Phase-III of Adyar river restoration for plugging of sewage outfalls into Adyar river. Out of the 56 sub-projects, 14 sub-projects are to be implemented by the CMWSS Board and administrative sanction has already been accorded to a value of Rs. 123.19 crores.
On completion, the CNWSSB would be plugging 39 sewage outfalls into river Adyar within Chennai city. The ongoing works are expected to be completed by 2022 and balance works that are tendered out and under preparation are expected to be completed by 2024.
