Report on eco-conservation park in Manakudy, Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu, 05/04/2021

Status report and action taken report by the Director of Fisheries, Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu dated 05/04/2021. The matter related to a news item on the setting up of an ecological park by destroying mangrove forests, Manakudy, Kanniyakumari district, Tamil Nadu.

The report stated that the Tamil Nadu government had accorded administrative sanction for the work of establishment of eco-conservation park in the existing estuarine fish farm at Manakudy in Kanniyakumari district under the World Bank scheme for an amount of Rs. 4.50 crore. The work was commenced on December 20, 2019 and completed on June 8, 2020.

The work was executed as per the conditions stipulated in the CRZ clearance. During the work, due to dumping of earth, few mangrove branches were broken/damaged. The Fisheries Department has already carried out mangrove plantation in the project site as compensatory plantation of mangroves in accordance with the CRZ Notification, 2011.

Saplings of Rhizophora mangroves, 50 in number were planted and at present 28 mangrove plants have survived. Further, as per the NGT order March 3, 2021 a joint inspection committee was constituted to be the nodal agency for conducting inspection and to file the present and factual conditions at the project site at Manakudy. The joint inspection has been carried out and the report was in the process of being finalized.
